Mike Pompeo has cemented his legacy as the most self-serving Secretary of State in recent US history
  • Mike Pompeo has cemented his legacy as a terrible Secretary of State.
  • Pompeo's misuses of the office bring shame to the position on a domestic and international level.
Mike Pompeo stepped into the job of Secretary of State promising to put swagger back in the step of American diplomats. They instead got the most self-serving Secretary in our country's history.

The damage done by Pompeo is about much more than the shame that he brought to a role once occupied by Thomas Jefferson. He leaves the post having irreversibly weakened the office and the Department. Pretty much the only thing he strengthened was his desire to seek higher office.

In case you didn't notice, the former Congressman from Kansas shamelessly used the role of the nation's top diplomat to brandish not only his credentials, but brazenly build for a future campaign. Some speculated he would leave the job early to run for an open Senate seat in his home state. But it seems like he may harbor even bigger dreams.

Having grand ambitions is a common trait of our secretaries of State. None demonstrated such Machiavellian manipulation of our nation's oldest cabinet agency.

He gave a primetime address to the Republican National Convention during his taxpayer-funded trip to Jerusalem. The speech was an unprecedented and unethical break with centuries of past precedent.

... Indeed, the violations he appears to have racked up got so serious the Inspector General was hot on his case. So, in true "nothing to see here" fashion, the Secretary had the President fire that IG. It is hard to overstate the problematic precedent he has set, both for career and political officials. Most concerning, is no one in the administration or on Capitol Hill has held him to account.
