Russian Interference in 2020 Included Influencing Trump Associates, Report Says
The assessment was the intelligence community’s most comprehensive look at foreign efforts to interfere in the election.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia authorized extensive efforts to interfere in the U.S. election to hurt Joe Biden’s chances, according to a newly declassified intelligence report.

The report determined that Russia mounted operations to influence people close to Donald Trump, pictured with Mr. Putin in 2017. It did not name the targets but seemed to refer to Rudolph Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, who relentlessly pushed allegations of corruption about Mr. Biden and his family. Unlike in 2016, there were no efforts by Russia or other countries to change actual ballots, the report found.

China considered similar efforts, but concluded that such an operation would fail, the report found. The U.S. intelligence community also determined that Iran attempted to aid Mr. Biden in the final days of the election by spreading emails that falsely claimed to be from the far-right group the Proud Boys.

Bank of America's top US equity strategist told us 2 trades to capitalize on policies like tax hikes and a minimum wage increase — and says investors have yet to price in Biden's focus on low earners relative to Trump
  • Bank of America's Savita Subramanian says investors aren't pricing in Biden's focus on low-earners.
  • Biden has said he plans to raise taxes on wealthier Americans, as well as raise the minimum wage.
  • It's a shift from former President Donald Trump's policies, and could impact stocks going forward.
President Donald Trump regularly used the performance of financial markets as a metric of his own success during his four-year tenure at the White House.

For example, even as the economy remained frail and COVID-19 cases spiked, Trump made a spontaneous appearance in the White House briefing room on November 24, 2020 to tout the Dow Jones Industrial Average breaking 30,000 for the first time.

President Biden has so far taken a different approach, following in the footsteps of former President Barack Obama in declining to use the stock market as a primary indicator of economic health, instead focusing on growth for lower-income workers.

While the stock market reflects the economy's trajectory to a degree, share prices are also influenced by things like interest rates and monetary policy from the Federal Reserve . The market's success also disproportionately benefits the wealthy: 84% of the worth of stocks owned by Americans belong to the country's wealthiest 10%, a 2017 study found; and about half of US adults don't own any stocks at all, according to a 2020 Gallup poll.

According to Bank of America's top US equity strategist Savita Subramanian, investors aren't paying enough attention to the shift in priorities of the Oval Office occupant.

Trump's children won't be able to run in 2024 because they'll be stuck in court, predicts his niece Mary
  • Donald Trump's children won't run for president in 2024 because they'll be too busy defending court cases, his niece Mary has predicted.
  • "Donald and possibly two or three of his children are going to be embroiled in lots of legal actions, starting in the future and the not too distant future," Mary Trump told Insider.
  • She added that Trump's children lack the "charisma" of their father.
Donald Trump's children will not be able to run for political office because they will be heavily embroiled in legal action relating to the Trump Organization, the former president's niece has predicted.

"Thanks in large part to their dad but also to their own anti-social tendencies, going to be defending themselves I'm guessing in a fair number of civil and criminal cases going forward," said Mary Trump in an interview with Insider last week.

"That is the only saving grace at the moment: Donald and possibly two or three of his children are going to be embroiled in lots of legal actions, starting in the future and the not too distant future," she said.

The former president's eldest child Donald Trump Jr. and his daughter Ivanka frequently both been linked with possible presidential runs in 2024. Mark Meadows, President Trump's former White House chief of staff, in February claimed that all the top GOP candidates for 2024 "have Trump as their last name."

... Mary Trump said that even if Trump's children were able to overcome any legal problems, her cousins lacked the "charisma" of their father, required to be successful in politics.

"He has a certain charisma that appeals to people's lowest and basest instinct and gives permission to people to be their worst selves," she told Insider.

"He can be charming, it makes sense to me that people can be taken in by him."

However, of Trump's children, she added: "They don't have that [charisma]."

A declassified US intelligence report threw cold water on Republican conspiracy theories about mail-in ballots
  • A US intelligence report released Tuesday debunked GOP conspiracy theories about mail-in ballots.
  • Trump and Barr claimed foreign countries mass produced mail ballots to rig the 2020 election.
  • "We have no indications that any foreign actor" engaged in such efforts, the report said.
But that theory was debunked by the US intelligence community, which said in its declassified report: "We have no indications that any foreign actor attempted to alter any technical aspect of the voting process in the 2020 US elections, including voter registration, casting ballots, vote tabulation, or reporting results."

The determination flew in the face of Trump and his associates' claims about foreign meddling with the voting process.

Republicans are recycling Trump's fear-mongering about terrorists entering the US through Mexico
  • Republicans have been portraying a surge in migrants at the border as a potential terror threat.
  • Trump also sought to tie illegal immigration to terrorism, despite little to no evidence.
  • The threat of terrorism in the US is largely homegrown, according to research and law enforcement.
As record numbers of unaccompanied minors turn up at southern border, congressional Republicans are echoing dubious claims from former President Donald Trump about terrorists attempting to cross into the US from Mexico.

... The FBI's terror watch list has been criticized as unfairly stigmatizing and arbitrary by civil liberties groups like the ACLU and was deemed unconstitutional by a federal judge in 2019.

... In the past, Trump made unsubstantiated claims about terrorists from the Middle East crossing the border.

"We have terrorists coming through the southern border because they find that's probably the easiest place to come through. They drive right in and they make a left," Trump said in January 2019.

But a September 2018 report from the State Department contradicted Trump. The report, released during Trump's second year as president, said there's "no credible evidence indicating that international terrorist groups have established bases in Mexico, worked with Mexican drug cartels or sent operatives via Mexico into the United States."

"The U.S. southern border remains vulnerable to potential terrorist transit, although terrorist groups likely seek other means of trying to enter the United States," the report added.

Despite the lack of evidence to support the notion that illegal immigration opens the door for terrorism in the US in a major way, top Republicans have consistently pushed this groundless talking point.

... Indeed, the threat of terrorism in the US is largely homegrown and primarily emanates from far-right extremist groups. The problem came to the forefront of the country's attention via the Capitol attack on January 6, which subsequently led more National Guard troops to be stationed in the nation's capital for President Joe Biden's inauguration than the total number of US troops currently in Afghanistan and Iraq combined.

... Republicans in Congress have consistently downplayed or ignored the threat of far-right extremism.

Judge who said QAnon Shaman 'blatantly lied' during '60 Minutes' interview released 2 new videos disproving shaman's claims
  • The court released two new videos Tuesday depicting protesters swarming the Capitol on January 6.
  • The footage appears to debunk claims made by the QAnon Shaman that officers "waved" protesters in.
  • The "Shaman's" lawyer said he was suspicious the videos had been released only after the hearing.
In a jailhouse interview with "60 Minutes+" earlier this month, the self-described QAnon Shaman, his lawyer, and his mother all repeated the claim that Chansley had only entered the Capitol because police officers had "waved" protesters in, signaling to Chansley that the move was "acceptable."

But in a March 8 motion remanding Chansley into custody, Judge Royce Lamberth skewered Chansley's story, saying the 33-year-old "blatantly lied" about his alleged invitation into the building and referenced video footage obtained by the government that Lamberth said disproved Chansley's claims about Capitol police officers.

"Not only is [Chansley] unable to offer evidence substantiating his claim that he was waved into the Capitol, but evidence submitted by the government proves this claim false," Lamberth wrote. "A video submitted by the government captures protesters breaking through the windows of the Capitol building."

On Tuesday, the court released that footage.

... The Arizona-native is facing six charges and up to 20 years in prison over his role in the riot. In addition to accusations that he illegally trespassed when breaching the Capitol, court records claim Chansley also clashed with Capitol police officers, went into the Senate chamber, and left a note on then-Vice President Mike Pence's dais saying "it's only a matter of time, justice is coming."

Trumpism
or Trump-ism

Trumpism refers to the nontraditional political philosophy and approach espoused by Donald Trump and his supporters. The term Trumpism can also be used to directly refer to an outrageous or idiosyncratic statement made by Donald Trump.

Trump, whom many observers consider an anomaly, left the White House by saying, “We will be back in some form.” His legacy is “Trumpism” – a wave of white nationalism.

Trumpisms are Bushisms on steroids.
