President Biden has escalated the government response to the pandemic. Tens of millions of Americans may be affected by the extensive mandates and executive orders the president announced this week to combat the coronavirus. “We’re in a tough stretch, and it could last for a while,” Biden said in an address Thursday. He added: “We have the tools to combat covid-19, and a distinct minority of Americans, supported by a distinct minority of elected officials, are keeping us from turning the corner.”
Eight key features of the new pandemic countermeasures:
  • Mandatory vaccines for federal employees and contractors
  • Vaccine mandates for businesses with 100 or more workers
  • Time off from work for shots
  • A health-care worker vaccine requirement
  • Additional precautions in schools
  • More support for coronavirus testing
  • Tougher penalties for travelers who do not wear masks — including doubled fines
  • Assistance for hospitals strained by covid-19 patients
Biden's approach is not unheard of on the global stage. With these mandates, the United States joins a growing number of countries that have made it more difficult to be unvaccinated. In fact, some nations have made it mandatory for all eligible people to receive them, such as Indonesia.
