GOP Sen. Roy Blunt says Trump should talk about the future rather than focus on 2020
  • GOP Sen. Roy Blunt said Trump should focus on the future rather than the past.
  • "The best thing that President Trump could do to help us win majorities in 2022 is talk about the future."
  • Trump continues to lie about the 2020 election being rigged.
Republican Sen. Roy Blunt on Sunday said former President Donald Trump's time could be better spent paying attention to the future rather than the past.

"I'm of the view that the best thing that President Trump could do to help us win majorities in 2022 is talk about the future," the Missouri Republican told NBC News. "He can be an important part of this '22 effort."

"Better off to talk about the future than to focus on the past in every election," Blunt, the No. 4 GOP senator, added.

The comments come as Trump contines to lie about the 2020 election being stolen from him. State and federal officials have found no evidence of widespread voter fraud during the election. Earlier this month, Trump said that Republicans wouldn't vote in upcoming elections if "we don't solve the Presidential Election Fraud of 2020." Last week, he called for Arizona, which was won by President Joe Biden, to "decertify" its "Fake Election results.

... "I hope that's where he focuses, but I don't manage his time or his comments," he continued.

... Blunt is among five Republican senators who have announced they won't seek reelection in next year's midterm elections. There are 34 Senate seats up for grabs in 2022, with Democrats hoping to maintain their narrow majority and Republicans aiming to flip the upper chamber red.
